New Interim Director of Special Services

The Port Angeles School District (PASD) Board of Directors has approved the appointment of Dr. Rachel Summers as the Interim Director of Special Services for the 2022-23 school year.

Dr. Summers comes to this role after serving PASD in the roles of Special Services coordinator, special education teacher, and kindergarten teacher. Her past experiences before joining PASD include serving as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, instructional coach, and elementary school principal.  Dr. Summers has also been PASD's COVID coordinator since the pandemic's start and continues to help guide our district through health and safety plans. 

Dr. Summers earned her bachelors degree in elementary and special education from Central Washington University. She holds a masters in English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education from Heritage University. Her principal and program director credentials are from City University. She earned her doctor of education degree in school improvement from the University of West Georgia.

In this position, Dr. Summers will oversee the nursing, counseling, special education, and family navigation departments. Dr. Summers says she "looks forward to working collaboratively with school, district, and community leaders, teachers, and families to provide guidance, supports, tools, and services needed to help all our students learn successfully."

Superintendent Brewer shared, "Dr. Summers has done a great job for us already, and I know she will continue to make a difference for our staff and students across the district."

On a personal note, she is a mother of a 13-year-old daughter, two sons in their 20s, and a golden retriever named Cowboy. She enjoys traveling, jogging, Mexican food, and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Summers is excited to serve the students, families, and staff of PASD.
