Port Angeles School District recognizes the importance of honoring the indigenous history, traditions, languages, and cultures of Indigenous people in the district, local area, State of Washington, United States, and worldwide. We acknowledge that we are on the indigenous lands of Coast Salish people, who have reserved territory rights to this land, specifically the Klallam Tribes. October is Disability History & Awareness Month
October is Disability History & Awareness Month
10/06/2022
Disability History and Awareness Month takes place in October. This month, PASD aims to increase awareness, respect, and acceptance for people with disabilities and to bring a greater sense of pride to people with disabilities. In 1975, the Individuals with Disabilities Act was passed, ensuring that every child has the right to an education and all students are provided equal access to learning, regardless of disability. Before this act, many children were denied education and learning opportunities. In 1970, U.S. schools educated only one in five children with disabilities. Many states had laws excluding certain students, including children who were deaf, blind, emotionally disturbed, or had an intellectual disability. Since the passage of this act in 1975, significant progress has been made toward meeting goals for developing and implementing effective programs and services for early intervention, special education, and related services. PASD believes all students have a right to meaningfully participate in the general education setting, both academically and socially, to the fullest extent possible. Join us in learning more about becoming an ally for those with disabilities.
