Technology is evolving rapidly, and tools like artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming part of everyday life. By thoughtfully incorporating AI into K–12 education, we prepare students not only to adapt to the future but to help create it.

AI supports our commitment to effective instruction, relevant learning opportunities, and high levels of learning for every student. It allows us to personalize learning, expand access to resources, and ensure students are prepared to succeed in a technology-rich future.

Preparing Students for the Future

Like earlier technologies (the internet, word processing, and digital communication), AI requires guided learning. Exposure to AI supports:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving — Students learn to ask better questions, analyze information, and verify sources rather than simply consume content.
  • Creativity and innovation — AI tools help students brainstorm, test ideas, and develop solutions, expanding what they can imagine and create.
  • Workforce readiness — Many future careers will involve AI. Early experiences in school help graduates succeed in a technology-rich workforce.

AI enhances our commitment to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by increasing access for students at all ability levels. AI supports:

  • Multiple means of representation — Text-to-speech, translation, and adaptive explanations that adjust complexity based on student needs.
  • Multiple means of expression — Options to demonstrate learning through writing, visuals, spoken responses, or interactive formats.
  • Multiple means of engagement — Personalized content and adaptive supports that foster persistence and motivation.

This ensures every learner has meaningful opportunities to access curriculum, express understanding, and engage deeply with learning.

AI is not a replacement for educators; it amplifies the power of teaching and learning. Teachers remain central, guiding students to use these tools responsibly, ethically, and creatively.
