Port Angeles Elementary Advisory Committee
Superintendent Michelle Olsen is forming the Port Angeles Elementary Advisory Committee to bring families, community members, and District leaders together to thoughtfully plan for the future of Port Angeles elementary schools.
When Hurricane Ridge Middle School opens, approximately 251 sixth-grade students will transition from our elementary schools to the new middle school. Based on current projections, our elementary enrollment for 2026-27 is approximately 1,544 students. With sixth grade moving to the middle school, our projected 2027-28 K-5 enrollment will be approximately 1,293 students.
The purpose of the Port Angeles Elementary Advisory Committee is to review current and projected enrollment, attendance boundaries, building capacity and utilization, educational programming, transportation, facility needs, financial sustainability, and other relevant considerations. Based on this review, the committee will provide recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the long-term configuration of the district’s elementary schools.
The committee’s responsibility will be to study the information, consider a range of options, understand the potential impacts of those options, and listen to the perspectives of our school communities before developing recommendations for the Board. These options may include adjusting attendance boundaries, changing where programs are located, consolidating or merging an elementary school’s students and attendance area into other elementary schools, and considering potential future uses for a building that may no longer be needed as a traditional elementary school.
Because this work has implications across our district and community, we want a broad range of perspectives at the table. The committee will include two community members; one parent or guardian from each of our five elementary schools; all five elementary principals; the PAEA president; two members of the Board of Directors; the superintendent and assistant superintendent; and the district’s directors of facilities, transportation, and capital projects.
