PASD Mask Update

New information regarding the mask mandate in Washington State was released on Monday, February 28, by Governor Inslee. With declining case rates and hospitalizations across the west, California, Oregon and Washington are moving together to update their masking mandates. After 11:59 p.m. on March 11, California, Oregon and Washington will no longer require masks to be worn in schools and adopt a mask-optional policy. The Washington State Department of Health will issue further guidance for K-12 schools on Monday, March 7,  so schools can prepare to implement updated safety protocols if needed.

What does this mean for Port Angeles Schools? Starting March 12, masks will be optional for students, staff, and visitors in all Port Angeles School District buildings. Until March 12, masks are still required. Masks will not be required but recommended on school buses after March 12. Please note we have a snow make-up day/no school scheduled on Monday, March 14, so our district's first mask optional school day for students is Tuesday, March 15.

We are prepared for these changes and will continue to:

  • Offer COVID-19 testing.
  • Utilize and maximize our ventilation systems.
  • Support those who choose to wear a mask and encourage using high-quality masks like surgical masks. We will continue to provide surgical masks for those who do not have them.
  • Remind staff and students to stay home if they are sick.
  • Practice thoughtful mitigation protocols such as physical distancing, hand hygiene, and sanitation practices.

Our educators will discuss the change with students in a developmentally appropriate manner, including respecting others' personal choices. If your child(ren) expresses any anxiety, please feel free to reach out to our school counseling team for support.

We will continue to communicate with you if there are any changes to the guidance for our district. We applaud and thank you for your continued patience and flexibility as we navigate this pandemic together. We can see the light and the end of the tunnel!
