Dear Parents/Guardians:

Port Angeles School District will again provide information about the disease Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) to all students in grades 5 through 12. AIDS is a life-threatening disease that destroys the body’s capability to fight infections. Due to the seriousness of this disease, which is a major public health issue, the Board, administration, and staff of Port Angeles School District believe that students should be provided with scientifically accurate information about the spread and prevention of the disease. We use the FLASH – Family Life and Sexual Health Curriculum. The curriculum is developed, published, and copywritten by Public Health – Seattle & King County. It meets the approval standard required by the AIDS Omnibus Bill of 1998 and is intended to provide basic information about AIDS.

This year, parents and guardians are asked to watch video presentations online here: www.thinglink.com/card/1384918325695348737. After watching the videos, please fill out the attendance form by clicking the “+” sign on the bottom right hand of the webpage. You will be directed to a google form where you state that you have watched the appropriate grade level video and Guest Speaker video and can opt-in or opt your student from HIV/Aids instruction at your school.

Please note that Washington State law provides that a parent or guardian must attend such a meeting before they can object and excuse a child or ward from participation in the HIV/AIDS prevention program. Please watch the video and fill out the form by December 10, 2021.

Thank you for your partnership. If you have any questions regarding this year’s AIDS Prevention Curriculum, please contact Darlene Armstrong by email DArmstrong@portangelesschools.org. Thank you!
