Capital Project - Hurricane Ridge (Stevens) Middle School

The Port Angeles School District is actively progressing with its major capital projects, with the new Stevens Middle School at the forefront. The project, funded by the community-supported 2020 capital levy, involves replacing the existing facility with a new, three-story building that will serve sixth through eighth graders, and include a significant modernization of the gym. Groundbreaking for the new facility took place in April 2025, with construction now underway. The project team, including the architectural firm Integrus and construction manager FORMA, is working to ensure the project stays on time and on budget. Once completed, the new school will provide a modern, secure, and expanded learning environment for students.

Progress on Hurricane Ridge Middle School continues on many fronts. Iron Workers are continuing to install the pieces for Level 2 and Level 3. A slab on grade pour was done for the music room/stage area and work on the gym has started up again.

This is another milestone in the construction process. The first piece of steel was installed Monday in the late afternoon. The building is quickly taking shape.

Today was another milestone day. The SOG for area 1B got placed today. Also, the brace frames on level 2 were also poured today. Both combined were close to 300 yards, delivered by Angeles Concrete.

The first picture of the sunrise over the site on a perfect day for concrete shows concrete being placed and Angeles Concrete with their trucks.

The second picture is getting close to finishing placing the concrete.

The third picture is the concrete crew working the slab.

The last picture is the slab looking down from level 2.

The slab on grade area 1A was poured on Wednesday

The second pour of the south retaining wall is complete with the third pour coming in early December. Waterproofing on the first and second pour is in the process of installation. The plumbing and electrical conduits on the north half are complete with the capillary break ready to be installed early next week. The slab on grade pour around should be around December 10th, weather permitting.

Most of the work is on the retaining wall forms. The retaining wall is 14’ high. As soon as the form is ready, the iron workers will start tying the rebar, and then it will be closed up. The other picture give a perspective of the size of the footprint of the new school.

The 14 foot retaining wall is getting formed up so the iron workers can get in and tie the rebar. Running footings were tied into the brace frames and some spread footing were poured. Utility conduits will soon be going in on the northern half and the prep for the slab-on-grade will begin.

  • The first drone picture is from 9/25/25 and they are about to start filling the brace frames. This is a great picture of the size of the building.
  • The second is brace frame #6 getting filled today.
  • The last is the base of the retaining wall getting the rebar tied. Depending on conditions, it will be filled with concrete the 7th.

Update: 9/25/25

  • These brace frame pours today used 220 yards of concrete from Angeles Concrete
  • Local company Interwest Construction Inc. (ICI) was working on the civil work on-site
  • Besides ICI, there were 8 local carpenters and laborers on site today, with a couple more starting next week.

Forma is expecting to pour 300 yards of concrete on 9/25/25. The concrete is from Angeles Concrete, a local supplier.
