Expectations & Examples of Geometry from the 2008 Math Standards Revision (draft) - Kindergarten

Identify, name, and describe circles, triangles, rectangles, squares (as special rectangles), cubes, and spheres, regardless of size or orientation.

Find circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, cubes, and spheres in a variety of contexts. Find common shapes in books, on the playground, in the classroom, on clothing, in art, etc.

Sort shapes using a sorting rule and explain the sorting rule. Given a selection of shapes, students might be asked to sort them into two piles and then describe the sorting rule. After sorting, a student might say, “I put all the round ones here and all the others there.” A group of pencils, for example, could be sorted by color, by length, by “sharpened or not sharpened,” etc.

Describe the location of one object relative to another object using words such as in, out, over, under, above, below, between, next to, behind, in front of. Examples:

  • Put this pencil under the paper.
  • I am between José and Katy.

Examples of Geometric Sense from the 2006 GLEs – Kindergarten

Describe familiar objects based on properties such as straight sides, number of sides, round, or like a box.

Sort objects in the environment by given properties, including sides, shapes, and colors.

Describe the location of an object relative to another using words, including in, out, over, under, behind, above, below, or next to.

Locate a three dimensional object relative to another given object.
