Mathematics
Background Information
The district’s Mathematics Curriculum Committee has been charged with the selection of district-wide math curriculum materials and identifying and aligning curriculum and professional development support for the use of these materials.
The math curriculum approach can be viewed as balanced numeracy, a balance between knowledge and understanding; computation and algorithms; and conceptual application of the computation and algorithms. Math fluency is still recognized as being critical to math success, as is math comprehension.

Washington State Guidelines
Washington State’s Essential Academic Learning Requirements, including the Grade Level Expectations, provide the foundation for the school district’s curriculum.
The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) outline the learning standards for grades K-10 at three benchmark levels: elementary, middle and high school.
The Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) provide detail about what students should know and be able to do by grade level.
The Charles A. Dana Center for Mathematics and Science Education at The University of Texas at Austin will assist the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in the State of Washington mathematics standards revision process in accordance with the objectives forth in the public RFP and the final recommendations adopted by the Washington State Board of Education.
