Reflections on the 2006-07 School Year

For the last six years, Stevens Middle School has used the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process to close the learning gap among students and assist them to meet district and state standards. Curriculum and assessments have been realigned to drive instruction based on data collected in the CQI process. As a result, student WASL scores continued to produce success in 2007:

  • All grade levels and subjects scored above the state average.
  • Although Native American students’ scores declined, they still scored in the top 5% for all Native American students in the state.
  • Science scores increased 10 percentage points, closed gender gap and scored 19 percentage points above the state.
  • 8th grade reading strand critical thinking increased 20 points.
  • 7th grade math strands - number sense, probability/statistics increased 18 – 20 points.plans for the 2007-08 school year

Student Learning. Seventh and eighth grade students are targeted for remediation and enrichment through additional time within the two-period block of language arts and mathematics. These students are identified by the WASL, grades, school assessments, teacher recommendations and parent requests. In addition:

  • The CQI process will continue to be used for data to adjust curriculum, instruction and assessments.
  • Saturday Academy will provide additional tutorial assistance for any student with a certificated staff member for four hours on bi-monthly Saturdays.
  • Communities that Care will provide tutors twice a week to work with 20-30 students needing additional skills to improve academics.
  • Homework Club will continue for students before and after school Monday-Thursday.
  • Parent-teacher conferences will inform parents how tutorials operate and whether their child is in need of attending specific topics.
  • Parent volunteers will be organized to work with individual students in a pair-share format.
  • AmeriCorps staff will work one-on-one with select students and organize after-school tutoring for qualifying students.
  • A Native American Interventionist will provide tutoring and communication between the school, tribe, parents to coordinate efforts for improving academics.
  • Student Learning Plans will be created for 7th or 8th grade students not reaching WASL standard.
  • IEP and 504 plans will be developed for students who qualify for specific assistance.
  • The Stevens Advanced Individual Learning (SAIL) a gifted language arts program, will provide challenges for students with high achievement and unique creative thinking ability.
  • Seminar, a program available for identified gifted and high potential students, will center upon high level thinking skills.
  • Advanced programs through algebra and select jazz band will also be available for students.

Professional Development. Collaboration time has been increased this year through block scheduling for each core team and the use of August workdays, LID days, math science grant funds and Wednesday late starts. All staff will continue to have in-service opportunities to enhance their instructional skills. Step Up to Writing and science kit training will be available for all new staff, along with advance course work opportunities. Use of technology will be enhanced with the addition of the computerized grade book through the Skyward® system.

School Climate. The Stevens Middle School community believes in: A safe, supportive and collaborative work environment for staff and students. Rigorous curriculum that addresses the varied needs of individual learners. Active parent and community partnerships. The continuing development of the skills and practices of positive citizenship, including personal responsibility for one’s actions. Education that prepares students for success as life-long learners in an ever-changing, multicultural, and technical world. Accepting and celebrating the individuality, and technical world. Accepting and celebrating the individuality and efforts of all students while cooperatively seeking academic excellence.

How Can You Help?
Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. But not all children learn in the same way at the same time. The parents, friends of Stevens students and our community are all instrumental in providing the additional support that makes learning at Stevens motivating and rewarding. We need your support to continue our rich history of a middle school that cares for kids and celebrates success. Please call us at 360.452.5590.
