Reflections on the 2015-16 School Year

Lincoln High School is an accredited alternative high school committed to offering a quality education that provides students with a rigorous curriculum, quality assessments and unique learning opportunities in which all learning styles can be successful. Our challenge is to continually look for ways to motivate students in their academic pursuits, and at the same time provide them with skills to be successful on standardized tests and acquire the necessary credits to graduate from high school.

Our areas of strength exist in our small class sizes, flexible scheduling, development of strong personal relationships, highly collaborative staff, individualized instruction and counseling, staff mentorship of students, opportunities for leadership, positive social interactions in school culture, community resources to help support our students, tolerance and acceptance towards diversity and a positive learning environment.

Our students’ 2016 Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) and End-of Course (EOC) highlights are as follows:

  • 70.9% of students made standard in Smarter Balanced Assessment, English Language Arts.
  • 34.6% 2016 Graduation Rate; five year extended grad rate, 45.5%.
  • Graduating seniors received $2,000 in scholarship money.

Plans for the 2016-17 School Year

Lincoln is a Focus School this year for its low on-time graduation rate.

As part of Lincoln’s focus, its staff has set the following Student and School Success Principles for the 2016-17 school year:
  1. Strong leadership: A team structure is incorporated into the school governance policy. All teams operate with work plans for the year and specific work products to produce. A Leadership Team consisting of the principal, teacher who leads the Instructional Teams, and other key professional staff will meet regularly, serve as a conduit of communication to the faculty and staff.
  2. Staff evaluation and professional development: Emphasize effective teaching, assessment of strengths and areas in need of improvement; offer opportunities for teachers to share their strengths; provide professional development based on needs.
  3. Expanded time for student learning and teacher collaboration: Meet students’ learning needs; sustain partnerships to support extended learning; provide targeted professional development; and use student data to inform modifications.
  4. Rigorous, aligned instruction: Engage teachers in aligning instruction with standards and benchmarks; assess and monitor student mastery; differentiate and align learning activities.
  5. Use of data for school improvement and instruction; assessment student learning frequently with standards-based assessments: Maintain a central data base with student information useful to teachers; learning goals set annually.
  6. Safety, discipline, and social, emotional and physical health; school and classroom culture: Demonstrate understanding of community cultures, customs and values; understand each student’s background and interests; reinforce classroom rules and procedures in a positive manner.
  7. Family and community engagement: Define the purpose, policies, and practices of a school community; provide two-way, school-home communication linked to learning; educate parents to support their children’s learning and teachers to work with parents.
Students have access to online course work to fulfill graduation requirements and to recover credits previously attempted. The staff has created a variety of support for students to complete course work by individualizing completion plans, setting up contracts, and providing extended hours for students to access computers and staff members.

Professional Development

Weekly collaborative professional development opportunities are directed by the schools' needs and their school improvement plans. The principal and the school team will use data to improve classroom instruction, school climate and culture and set student growth goals. The School Success coach will provide monthly professional development to the school leadership team that will give them the tools to use achievement and other data to improve instruction and school climate and culture. Professional development with staff will be centered on using data and how to incorporate Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies (PBIS), tier 1 into the school culture.

School Climate

A recent Center for Educational Excellence (CEE) survey of parents indicated support for the following categories and characteristics of high performing schools: effective leadership, 90%; supportive learning environment, 90%; high standards & expectations, 89%; clear & shared focus, 84%; and collaboration & communication, 83%. The curriculum, instruction and assessment category was rated positive at 85%.

A continued priority is letting the Port Angeles community know about the educational programs and opportunities available to students at Lincoln and on the Lincoln campus. We continue to plan more opportunities for community groups and parents to become involved at Lincoln and for students to be more involved in the community through job shadowing or presentations to service organizations and business groups. Strengthening ASB leadership and school involvement is an ongoing focus for students and staff.

Use and Condition of Building

Lincoln High School’s facility was built in the mid-1950s as an annex to an existing elementary school. The upper portion of the facility was constructed in 1953, and the lower classroom section added in 1955. The physical evaluation of this educational facility is rated 83% based on a January 7, 2008 study and survey by BLRB Architects.
