The Port Angeles School District Board of Directors established the Kindergarten Study Task Force on January 27, 2003. Task force members were charged with examining current literature and developing a board recommendation regarding enhanced kindergarten programs.
Several district elementary schools are currently offering some kindergarten program enhancements with grant funds. Recent literature indicates remarkable growth in student learning as a result of enhanced programs. District kindergarten teachers, Title I reading support teachers, a developmental pre-school teacher, and central services staff members have discussed the need for enhancing kindergarten programs throughout the district.
The task force was balanced with representation from the school board, building administrators, certificated and classified employees, parents, and community representatives. Task force members presented their final report to the Board of Directors on Monday, February 23, 2004.
