The Port Angeles City Council honored the winners of the Race Equality Essay contest sponsored by the Community Multicultural Alliance at its Tuesday, March 2 meeting. Superintendent of Port Angeles Schools Jane Pryne and City of Port Angeles Mayor Dan Di Guilio presented certificates to the 31 contest winners.

With Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message of racial equality being a focal point for the contest, students were given various topics, ranging in difficulty level from “Draw a picture of your friend in any color that you would like to be, and write one sentence explaining why your friend is special” for kindergartners to “Write a letter to Martin Luther King, Jr. telling him about how his work changed America and what we still need to do to further his dream” for seventh through ninth grade participants.

Thank you to each teacher who involved students in this contest, and congratulations to the award winners!  Thank you to volunteers who spent hours reading and evaluating essays!
