General Information

Financial assistance for college comes primarily from four sources: the colleges themselves, the government, national and regional scholarships, and local scholarships. The Port Angeles community has one of the most successful local scholarship programs in the nation, awarding about $250,000 a year to graduates. There are scholarships for students planning to attend technical colleges, vocational institutes, community colleges, and four-year colleges.

Students apply for these funds by completing a scholarship notebook during the senior year. Detailed information about the notebook is provided to seniors in monthly meetings beginning in early October. The notebook is due in January, and the scholarships are awarded at an evening event in May.

Each local scholarship has its own set of judges. Most of the award winners are selected by the organizations sponsoring the scholarship; a few scholarships are decided by a committee made up of staff and community members. See your counselor for more information on the local scholarship notebook process.

The high school also helps students access regional and national scholarships. The Career Center has computer search programs, books of scholarships and a list of internet sites. The Guidance and Counseling Center maintains a file of scholarship applications which are mailed to the high school. These opportunities also are listed in the senior newsletter.

The federal and state government offer grants and loans, mostly based on financial need. Families complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in early January. The high school has a workshop each year to explain these government programs.

The largest amounts of scholarships are awarded by the colleges themselves. College catalogs and web sites have specific information on their offerings. High school juniors should get help from the Career Center & Guidance Center in developing a list of schools. Scholarship offerings are one factor to consider when deciding where to apply.
