Principal's Message
It is hard to believe March is already here. To begin with I would like to recognize Julian Huxtable and his Men's Choir Teacher, Mrs. Jolene Dalton Gailey. Julian was named the Outstanding Tenor Soloist at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. This is a tremendous accomplishment and honor. Congratulations Julian! Continuing with Fine Arts, Mr. Doug Gailey has been awarded Secondary Music Teacher of the Year for the entire State of Washington. Congratulations Mr. Gailey! We are all honored to have you as our band director. Also, Mrs. Dalton Gailey was awarded the Outstanding Music Educator Award for the North Olympic Region.
Congratulations Mrs. Dalton Gailey! We are all honored to have you as our choir director and dance team instructor. I would also like to highlight our Girls Basketball team that has been ranked as high as fourth in the state and plays Lakes High School tonight in Auburn for a State Tournament berth.
In addition, there is a spreadsheet listing many outstanding performances this past month. One hundred and eighty-three students are listed for their positive contributions to Port Angeles High School. The list is in alphabetical order and includes Skills USA, DECA, FBLA, Music and Athletic students.
The triad ends on March 19, so please remind your students to get all of their work in so they can get off to a fast start this second semester.
The following week, Tuesday, March 16, our state testing cycle begins. The state test is now called the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) and replaced the WASL. All sophomores, some juniors and seniors who have not passed the HSPE will take the test. The Reading test is March 16 and Writing is March 17 and 18. Mathematics and Science will be tested in April. Passing the HSPE satisfies one of the mandatory requirements for graduation. Freshmen will be taking benchmark tests during the HSPE tests and juniors and seniors who have passed the HSPE will have late start on those days. Parents, please make sure your student attends on each of those critical HSPE days.
On testing days test takers will start at 7:45 a.m. All 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who need to pass the test must show up at 7:45 a.m. 11th and 12th graders who have passed the test begin school at 10:20 a.m.
Finally, another reminder that the end of March is the time to sign up for next year's classes. Parental involvement in this process is crucial to your student's success. With your encouragement and guidance, students are much more likely to take a rigerous course of study that will prepare them for a higher education and the world of work after high school. Don't let your son or daughter take the easy road-challenge and encourage them to take advanced classes in all subject areas as well as maintain a full schedule of classes.
