Inclement Weather Notification

November 19, 2009

Port Angeles Transportation Center
Port Angeles School District #121
639 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, Washington 98362
(360) 452-9714

On days of inclement weather, there is the possibility of starting school two hours late, and in the event of a rapidly declining weather situation, ending school early rather than just closing school. By doing this, it makes for much safer travel as it allows the county and state road crews more time to clear roads. It also gives the children walking to and from bus stops and schools better daylight to walk in, therefore improving their safety.

School closure information is broadcast throughout the day on Radio KONP 1450 AM, and on most Seattle area TV (Channels 4, 5, 7 and 13). This information is also available on the school district website at www.portangelesschools.org.

Depending on weather conditions, decisions to close school or start late are usually made by 5:00 a.m., and generally out to the news media by 5:30 a.m. Any changes made throughout the day will be broadcast on Radio KONP and posted on the school district's website.

It is extremely important for each family to have an alternate plan in the event that the normal school day is adjusted for safety. Please have a plan in place for your children in the event that there is a two-hour delay and you have to leave before the school bus arrives.

A two-hour delay will mean that your bus will be at each stop two hours later (7:05 a.m. would become 9:05 a.m.).

Also in a late start situation, there will be no pre-school programs.

If the weather becomes worse, there is always the possibility that a late start could be changed to a school closure, or that an early release would be determined necessary.

It is important that your children understand your expectations in the event of an emergency schedule change. At the elementary level, students will not be released from school until direct contact has been made with an adult authorized on the student’s enrollment form.

If buses cannot run regular routes, we will broadcast whether Bus Schedule “A” or “B” will be used. The limited bus changes will only affect those living in our mountain areas (Lake Dawn, Upper Mt. Pleasant, Black Diamond, Ennis Creek, Eden Valley, Dan Kelly, Herrick Road). These limited areas could also be affected for the return routes after school. Stay tuned to your radio or TV during snow days.

Maintaining an accurate bus schedule in inclement weather is difficult. Because of problems with schedules on these days, please have your children dress appropriately for the cold weather to allow them to wait safely and comfortably.
