Students Wrap up Cycling Lessons with a Bike Rodeo
June 26, 2012
Port Angeles, Wash. - Roosevelt Elementary's parking lot was transformed in to an obstacle course last week as about 130 Roosevelt and Franklin fifth grade students practiced bicycle and pedestrian safety skills before school let out for the summer.
Port Angeles School District physical education teachers and community cyclist and parent volunteers guided the students through various stations - crosswalk safety, signaling for bicycling turns, and other riding safety skills of the road.
Bicycles and safety gear were purchased as part of a district-wide bicycling and pedestrian safety grant awarded earlier in the school year. The event wrapped up the curriculum portion of the program required as part of the grant.
An accompanying photo shows John Kilzer, School District music instructor and avid cyclist, as he leads students through a bicycling safety exercise.
