Maria White Chosen as KONP May Teacher of the Month
May 31, 2012
Port Angeles, Wash. – KONP Radio’s Todd Ortloff and Shenna Straling, branch manager of Sterling Bank in Port Angeles, surprised Roosevelt Elementary School teacher Maria White today to announce she’s the May Teacher of the Month in the monthly recognition program. Ortloff and Straling made the announcement at the school’s monthly assembly.
Sterling Bank has joined with KONP and the Port Angeles School District as a sponsor in the two-year-old teacher recognition program and awards each recipient with a gift card.
White is a primary functional life skills teacher at Roosevelt. She began working for the School District in the fall of 1988.
"Even though there are dozens of teachers worthy of nomination at Roosevelt Elementary,” read the nomination," Maria White stands out. Maria has worked for the Port Angeles School District for more years than she would like to be revealed. Each of those years she has tirelessly served our students with unique needs. Mrs. White is often the first teacher at school and the last to leave. She is here designing special curriculum and materials for each individual student, each day. She truly believes every child is special and deserves the opportunity to reach their highest potential.”
The KONP Teacher of the Month program is sponsored by KONP Radio and Sterling Bank with the help of local students, staff and community members. Nominations for featured teachers in the Port Angeles, Sequim and Crescent School Districts, plus Queen of Angels and Olympic Christian Schools, were solicited during November and December 2011, and are announced monthly by Ortloff and Straling.
Franklin teacher Claire Rausch was announced earlier as the January 2012 Teacher of the Month, and Mark Schmidt, a teacher at Stevens Middle School, was February’s selection. Debbie Erickson, also from Franklin Elementary was the March Teacher of the Month, and James Ray, district-wide strings teacher, was selected for April.
Nominations are now closed for the 2011-12 school year. Stay tuned for information about next year’s school program beginning in the fall!
