Todd Ortloff Show January 16, 2018: Port Angeles’ Roosevelt Elementary named a 2017 school of distinctionRepresentatives from Roosevelt Elementary including principal Michelle Olsen, third grade teacher Erica Kuch, head custodian Dena Duce and third grade teacher Jennifer Reynolds talked on the air with Todd Ortloff about being named a 2017 School of Distinction.  This distinction marks five years of improvement in test scores, placing Roosevelt Elementary in the top 5% of schools in Washington State.

Principal Olsen emphasized that this was the result of an all-out group effort by staff to meet kids where they are.  “We’re focusing on the standards, and we celebrate what students are showing us,” she stated.

“To finally receive this award was amazing!” said Jennifer Reynolds, a third grade teacher at Roosevelt.  “Collaboration played a huge role.”

“We’re constantly looking over data to see where improvement is needed,” said Erica Kuch, another third grade teacher at Roosevelt.  “We collaborate with other teachers on a daily basis.”

“A custodian is a support staff member.  We support teachers, provide a warm environment so students can learn,” said Dena Duce, head custodian.  “Everyone working together---that’s what it takes.  I see lots of students in the hallway and I have a smile on my face for them.”

“Everyone is focused on caring for our students,” concluded Olsen.  “Kids need to feel safe and loved, then they can feel ready to learn.”
