Roosevelt Elementary fourth graders raise environmental awarenessRoosevelt Elementary students Becca Manson and Jaidence Blore from Terri Longin’s fourth grade class are working on a Genius Hour project to eliminate single-use plastic bags from the City of Port Angeles.

Becca and Jaidence decided last fall they would like to see the end of single-use plastic bags in Port Angeles, so they began by researching plastics and plastic garbage and how it is harmful throughout the world. The also learned about the recycling of plastics. Last November they attended a Port Angeles City Council meeting and were able to express their opinion there. Two weeks ago, they were part of a panel addressing the issue at Peninsula College.

The girls created tee-shirts and handed out reusable shopping bags with messages about their cause at stores around town. “Both girls are very passionate about this project,” said Terri Longin, their teacher.  “They have created a presentation for the Ridge students and hope to present at the city council again when the vote comes up.”

Genius Hour takes place for one hour each week in our classrooms in the Ridge, Roosevelt’s Highly Capable program. It is an opportunity for students to explore a new piece of learning or spend time on a passion. Examples of projects range from learning the basics of French, video game codes, dance around the world, and saving the cheetah to making positive changes in our lunchroom.
