Port Angeles High School Bands Earn Awards in Washington, D.C.Over spring break, 93 Port Angeles High School Band musicians, along with 29 chaperones, spent an exciting week in Washington, D.C.

Highlights included our band’s performance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, watching wreath laying ceremonies and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery, attending a performance of The Wiz at Ford’s Theatre, and a dinner and dancing cruise on the Potomac River.   Nearly two full days were spent visiting the National Mall where students had the opportunity to visit the United States Holocaust Museum, the new National Museum of African American History and Culture and many other incredible museums, monuments and memorials.

The culmination of the trip was a competition that involved other musicians from a variety of locations including California, New Jersey, and Ontario, Canada.  Under the direction of Douglas Gailey, Port Angeles High School Band members performed admirably.

During an awards ceremony held at Medieval Times, they young musicians were presented with the following accolades:  Symphonic Band/Gold Award and First Place; Wind Ensemble/ Gold Award; Percussion Ensemble/Gold Award; Jazz Ensemble/ Gold Award and Outstanding Band of the Festival (represents the highest scoring band among all participants); Adjudicators’ Award (requires an average score of all a schools’ ensembles of 92 points or higher); Sweepstakes Award (school with the highest combined point total for any two groups of their ensembles).

Jordan Nicolas, a junior who plays trumpet and trombone, received the Maestro Award.  Jordan was singled out by the adjudicators for displaying extraordinary musical ability and sensitivity during his performances at the festival.
