Peer Model Program

The Peer Model Program is a component of the School District’s special education preschool program which services preschool age children with developmental delays. Peer models are children without developmental delays, ages four to five years old, integrated into the program to participate in an enriched learning environment focused on stimulated the senses, enhancing academics and communication skills, encouraging appropriate social interaction, teaching problem solving skills and facilitating independence.
The Peer Model Program provides typically developing children an opportunity to interact with same age peers who are receiving specialized instruction. Typically developing peers are positive role models for students with disabilities. Inclusive preschool programs promote belonging, friendships, and understanding and acceptance of others that are different.

Peer models should be able to:
  • Play cooperatively with their same-age peers
  • Comply with adult requests
  • Communicate effectively
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate skills
  • Participate in group activities
  • Be independent in toileting and self-care skills

Program compatibility:
Not every child is the right fit for being a peer model. If your child is enrolled as a peer model and there are concerns regarding your child’s current skills and abilities to be able to act in the role of a peer model, the school will communicate with you to determine what changes may be needed to help your child have a successful experience. However, on rare occasions, the school and director of special services may determine that it is not a good fit and ask your child to stop being a peer model. This must occur by the 10th of the month. If this occurs, your child will be able to remain in the program until the end of the current month
