Celebration of the Book

On Thursday, September 20, over 280 first-grade students from Crescent, Jefferson, Hamilton, Roosevelt, and Franklin Elementary Schools helped the Port Angeles Main Library celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month at a community-wide celebration of books and reading.

Port Angeles High School Cheerleaders greeted the young students with reading cheers and big smiles. Local celebrity guest readers shared picture books and talked about their own love of reading with small groups of students.  All students who attended received a copy of Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel and a NOLS book bag, generously funded by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library.

Over 30 community members volunteered for the event.  Guest readers included Mayor Sissi Bruch, Port Angeles Police Department Officer Jeff Ordoña, Port Angeles Fire Department Chief Ken Dubuc, Olympic National Park Ranger Dean Butterworth, Poser Yoga Studio Owner Jenny Houston, Tamara Galvan of the Feiro Marine Life Center (plus a sea otter from First Federal Bank), author Lisa Mantchev, Dentist Dr. Kirsti Turella, Port Angeles Symphony Director Jonathan Pasternack, Peninsula College’s Grace Kendall, Dr. Darlene Clemens, and representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard.  Volunteers from Port Angeles High School cheerleading squad, Wells Fargo, United Way of Clallam County, and the Coast Guard also assisted with logistics of the event.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.  Port Angeles Main Library’s Celebration of the Book is part of the library’s ongoing efforts to encourage families and students to use the library.  As a result of the event, over 83 new library cards were issued to first-grade students!
