PAHS Strings Shine in BellinghamPort Angeles High School students participated in the statewide high school orchestra festival, sponsored by the Washington chapter of the American String Teachers Association and Western Washington University, in Bellingham on March 16 and 17.

Each orchestra performed in its own division as follows: freshman-only ensembles (our Concert Orchestra), large string ensembles (Symphonic Orchestra), and chamber orchestras (our Chamber Orchestra). Every participating group receives Bronze, Silver, or Gold ratings, based solely upon the quality of their own performance. All the Port Angeles High School orchestras received Gold ratings.

“In addition, among other Gold-level groups, our Concert and Chamber orchestras each placed First in their respective divisions—which included peer ensembles from several fine programs across our state,” said Dr. James Ray, orchestra teacher at Port Angeles High School.

The adjudicators for the festival included string/orchestra faculty from universities in both Washington State and British Columbia. Port Angeles High School students received written and verbal praise from these judges, highlighting “strong, focused sound” (Concert); “Wonderful communication and expression!” (Chamber), and “Good energy … and overall musicianship” (Symphonic). One judge described the Chamber Orchestra’s performance of the opening movement from Grieg’s famous Holberg Suite as the best he’d ever heard.

“I am immensely proud of our PAHS orchestra students and the incredible musicianship they displayed this weekend,” said Dr. Ray. “Congratulations to all our string kids!”
