PAHS DECA to Nike Leadership ExperiencePort Angeles High School DECA students recently took part in a Nike Leadership Experience event in and around the Portland, OR area.  The group included Kyle Benedict, Joshua Boe, Nacia Bohman, Travis Bradow, Mikkiah Brady, Leah Burwell, Josie Ciaciuch, Liam Clark, Chase Cobb, Skyler Cobb, Eden Critchfield, Reagan Critchfield, Dilon Ebalo, Garrett Edwards, Erin Frazier, Wyatt Hall, Henry Irwin, Tanner Lunt, Isaiah Martinez, Adriana Mcclain, Isabella Money, Emma Murray, Aeverie Joe Politika, Colby Rentas, Katelyn Sheldon, Andrew St George, Olivia Tejeda, Kyler Tourbin, Treyton Walde, Myra Walker, Tanner Walker, Cole Walsh, Sol Wasankari-Mendoza, Delaney Wenzl, Cheyenne Wheeler, Colby White, Jaida Wood, and Hayden Woods.

On Monday, March 12, the students began their day at Sports Career Consulting, discussing the world of Sports Marketing and how to get a job.   The group then toured Ron Tonkin Field and met with KL Wombacher, general manager of the Hillsboro Hops, Class A farm team for the Arizona Diamondbacks.   The students then toured the Moda Center facility, where the Portland Trail Blazers play, and met with Joe Isse, Director of Inside Sales.  Next, students visited Adidas Corporate Headquarters in Portland, OR.  They also visited Nike’s Flagship store in downtown Portland.  The group concluded their day back at Moda Center to watch the Portland Trail Blazers defeat the Miami Heat!

Next morning, the group toured Nike World Headquarters campus through a torrential downpour.  The campus tour included stops at the Michael Jordan building, the Bo Jackson building, and many others.  Lunch in Nike’s cafeteria afforded views of an on-campus man-made lake.  Several Nike employees met with the group to discuss career-related topics, such as describing their career paths, outlining a typical work day at Nike, covering Nike internship opportunities, and sharing networking methods for job seeking.  Kenny Matias, Senior Director for Jordan Brand Studios, took time to talk with students.

The group visited headquarters for Columbia Sportswear, talking with a business-to-business marketing manager for their employee store.  They wrapped the trip up by visiting with a former Weiden+Kennedy advertising executive, Alex Dobson.  Dobson reviewed a number of commercials with the students, describing the creative process advertisers use.  Students broke into small groups to create a mock-social media campaign for a Star Wars licensed Columbia Sportswear product.

“We were able to pack a lot into a short trip,” said Jennifer Rogers/PAHS Marketing Instructor and DECA Advisor. “The students were exposed to many different aspects of the business world.  We headed back home with 38 exhausted students.”
