The Port Angeles School District has a rich history of educating students well, and preparing them for life. Historically, on many measures our students have fared well in their performance exhibitions, whether those be standardized achievement tests, college admissions exams, scholarship awards, or music competitions. Our teachers enjoy enviable respect and community support for their work with students, and their accomplishments as professionals. Our community has repeatedly stepped forward with scholarships, with commitments of time, and with levy and bond funding to support essential needs. Port Angeles is a community that is proud of its schools, and we’re proud of our role in our community.
The demands upon schools have changed, dramatically so in the past few years. Washington State standards, the requirements of No Child Left Behind, and increasingly difficult economic and family circumstances of our students pose formidable challenges. Research shows increasing agreement among college professors and employers about what our students need to know and be able to do, and how much we have to improve to meet those needs. There is no question that our schools have served the majority of students well over the years. The challenge before us is to serve every student well, and preparing every student to live, work, and learn in a future very different from ours’, and our parents’.
Never in my career have I worked with so many people so singularly committed to the success of students, so committed to the success of schools as learning communities, and so committed to supporting one another in our work together.
